OptoTech Optikmaschinen GmbH is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Since its founding in 1985 by Roland Mandler, the company has grown from a small workshop in central Hesse into a global leading provider of machines and solutions for precision optics and ophthalmics. Today, OptoTech technologies are regarded as the industry standard in both fields.
What once began in a garage – at a time when communication was still handled by fax and the first computer-based solutions were emerging – has become a globally positioned company with around 600 employees. The founder’s vision remains just as relevant today: not only to improve optical components, but above all to improve manufacturing processes. After all, the best products are created through the best processes.

Event Highlights
From Start-up to Technology Leader
At an early stage, OptoTech set benchmarks with CNC-controlled grinding and polishing machines as well as innovative processing technologies. A major milestone was the development of the UPG 2000 CNC – the world’s largest ultra-precision machining center, capable of producing mirrors for demanding applications such as astronomy. Today, OptoTech solutions are used in numerous future-oriented markets – from semiconductors and laser technology to consumer optics such as cameras and binoculars.
Precision Optics Expertise for Ophthalmics
In 1999, OptoTech successfully transferred its expertise to ophthalmic optics. Today, the company offers complete manufacturing solutions – from lens processing, polishing and coating to software, automation and accessories.
The company’s ambition has always remained the same: to make its customers more successful in their business. Technological solutions are developed from specific applications – in close cooperation and a spirit of partnership. The result is efficient, reliable and future-proof manufacturing concepts for a wide range of requirements – from small labs to industrial-scale production.
40 Years of Partnership and Trust
OptoTech celebrated this anniversary together with employees, customers and partners from around the world. During an international customer day, numerous guests took the opportunity to learn about new technologies, applications and trends in the photonics industry and to exchange ideas.
Many of these partnerships have lasted for decades and highlight the close ties the company maintains with customers worldwide.
“What is crucial to our success is not only the quality of our machines, but also our commitment to making our customers sustainably more successful – through the right technology and through partnership-based collaboration.” – Jens Schäfer, Managing Director
Strong Roots, Global Presence
Despite its international focus, OptoTech has remained true to its roots. The headquarters in Wettenberg is still the heart of the company today. At the same time, being part of the Schunk Group since 2018 has provided additional stability, investment and a strong technological foundation for future growth.
Looking to the Future
Even after 40 years, OptoTech remains an innovation leader. New machine concepts, automation solutions and AI-based software continue to drive the advancement of optical manufacturing processes.
“We look back on our history with pride and toward the future with confidence. Together with our customers, we will continue to set standards in the optics industry in the years to come.” – Dr. Stefan Seifried, Managing Director
